POTENTIAL DESIGN
The
renditions below, created by Michael Knox and drawn by Jolyon Sasse, are rough concept drawings of one
possibility under consideration.
An
aerial view will show a peace symbol in white surrounded by a blue circle. Side views will reveal the twelve facets
of the symbol. As one's eyes move skyward, the monument's dimensions will
gradually reduce in size to form a sharp peak.
The drawings below show the
monument as it might look from all angles as one walks around the structure.
Officials in government aircraft allowed to fly over the area will be the only
ones to see the peace symbol aerial view on the right. These views are for
illustration purposes only, the US Peace Memorial will not rotate.

The 12 walls or facets of the
monument will contain engravings of peace quotes by famous Americans including,
among many others, Martin Luther King Jr, Jeanette
Rankin, Margaret Mead, Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Jane Addams, Ernest
Hemingway and Presidents Madison, FDR, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Carter.
Peace-related artwork, poetry, and symbols of peace such as the peace sign,
doves, olive branches might also be included. The area
may include a Peace Rose garden, reflecting pool/fountain, and the music of
peace. The US Peace Registry will be available on site as searchable
video displays for review by visitors.
As drawn, the height at the peak
will be 200 feet. By comparison, the Washington Monument is 555.5 feet tall.
Like the Washington Monument, the Peace Memorial will have a white marble
exterior and an aluminum cap. The proposed circle has an outside diameter of
150 feet and an inside diameter of 110 feet. The circular walkway will be
finished in deep blue ceramic tile.
Founding Members are invited to submit ideas and will be involved in
choosing the final architectural design. Alice Yeager, Founding Member and artist, completed
the first artist's conception of the US Peace Memorial. TO SEE HER DRAWING please click

Member and artist Beth Brookfield submitted the second drawing. TO SEE IT please click here.
